Polarizing Filters

There are many types of camera filters available today for the amateur and professional photographer. One type is a polarizing filter, which every photographer needs.

Polarizing filters, like some other filters, help reduce light by blocking over exposure. They also enhance color and contrast in a different way than other filter types. When light rays bounce off a reflective surface, such as a lake or glass, white light washes out the photo. Photographers use polarizing filters to select which light rays enter the camera lens.

A Nikon 62mm circular polarizing filter blocks reflections on glass, water, and other shiny materials while enhancing colors. With Nikon circular polarizing filter, the sky is bluer and the grass greener.

Want to view and take photos of the moon? The best filter to use is a variable polarizing filter. These include two polarized filters mounted in a special cell. The lenses are optimized to catch expert photos of the moon in different luminous lunar phases. These work great when photographing the moon during the morning, or against a star backed sky at night.

Test a Hoya polarizing filter to view the difference between it and using none at all. This popular brand was designed to help reduce the glare for outdoor use. It allows the photographer to rotate the lens and choose how much reflective light to add in.

Hoya also makes ultra thin polarizing filters. These help cut out the vegetating at the frame corners created by normal, but thick, polarizing lenses. Thin polarizing filters do cost more than regular polarizing filters, but if the photographer is having difficulties with the frame, it may be time to purchase an ultra thin polarizing filter.

Another popular brand is the Canon circular polarizing filter. The filter works in a circular pattern to allow clear and vibrant images without interfering with the auto focus, or TTL (through the lens) light metering.

A polarizing filter for digital cameras is also available. These work on the more expensive digital camera varieties that come with removable lenses. These are good filters to use for photographers serious in taking expert photos.
