Flashes

How does flash photography work? By utilizing a small light source especially useful in darkened areas. This light source is called a flash.

Many modern cameras today include a built in camera flash. Built in camera flashes differ from attachable camera flashes by sending an instantaneous burst of light that lasts just long enough for the camera to snap a picture. An external flash for a camera includes the option of a continuous light useful for moving, or delayed flash photography.

A Fuji camera hot shoe external flash allows the photographer to slide the flash body into adjacent camera flash mounts. This flash will work on Fuji digital cameras with the added camera flash bracket.

How does a flash work on a digital camera? Low cost digital cameras include a built in flash similar to those listed above. Cameras in mid price ranges integrate additional flash settings such as red eye, which helps cut down and eliminate the appearance of red eyes in photographs containing people. These also have a popup flash that users can set to manual control. An auto flash setting lets the camera decide when a flash is needed depending on current lighting conditions. A slow 1 or 2 setting slows down the flash speed along with the shutter speed. This enables a sharper subject with ambient light from the background in the photo.

Some digital cameras in the high price range, $600 or above use both a built in flash, with a flash “hot shoe” and bracket on top giving the photographer the option of adding a larger external flash. Built in flashes tend to have a limited flash range, stationary light direction and only marginally reduce red eye. An external flash extends the flash range, include light direction rotation and under the right circumstances can completely eliminate red eye. Older external flashes needed to plug into a wall socket. Newer models use batteries with the option of a connector. Expensive external flashes have swivel heads that move side to side and up and down.

Specifications on the Canon camera flash, model number 0298B002, involves an automatic zoom setting, horizontal and vertical rotation angles, daylight color temperature. The maximum shooting distance the light will enable is up to 24.3 meters with the minimum near 2.3 feet. This camera flash type takes four AA alkaline batteries. This camera flash includes a built in diffuser to soften hard lighting. A feature included in most external camera flashes.
